DECLAWING CATS

Declawing cats is a hot topic in Veterinary medicine. This procedure was commonly performed to keep indoor cats from damaging furniture in homes for decades. This is a very normal cat behavior. In recent years, ethical concerns have been raised about if we should perform these procedures on pets. Declawing a cat involves removing the last segment of bone on each finger/toe. New surgical lasers make the process less painful and heal faster with less problems. Complications with this procedures including; intense pain, bleeding and infection. In time, most aesthetic surgeries like ear cropping, tail docking, and declawing will likely be strictly controlled or made illegal in individual states. For now, it is recommended that you have a sit down conversation with your Veterinarian about the procedure and whether or not it is in the cat’s best interest to have it done.
